Andy Fink: How did you come up to being a music artist and what makes you so passionate about House music?
Dumb Dan: I first got into electronic music, then italo disco, collecting records. at the same time I was learning, as a kid,
to play the piano and soon I put the two together. I was on a trip with my dad to London in 1988 when I
first heard acid house blasting out from a shop… I was hooked there and then, haven’t looked back since.
Andy Fink: Is there any story behind your name? Why Dumb? :)
Dumb Dan: no story I’m afraid, other than it sounded cool. and house music people in general are pretty dumb. me
too.
Andy Fink: I’m really curious – why have you been using
completely different names for some of your tracks? I mean the ones like Baldi, Bjorn Barf, The Four
Fuckwits etc. It can be really confusing for people who are looking for your sound sometimes :)
Dumb Dan: I’ve used about ten others you don’t know about too! :) the thing is… a couple of years ago I made so much
music I was afraid people would get sick of me… like that Paduradu guy, you know? who released a track a
day on beatport.
Andy Fink: You’ve def seen and heard a lot during your musical career. How much it’ve been so far, hmm, more than
15 years? What can you say about all the changes that musical industry suffered? And what do you think
about all the comebacks to the 80-ies stuff and re-using them these days?
Dumb Dan: I released my first record 1989, and did the odd release every now and then… but it took many years before
I could do music full time, as a job. so I haven’t really been active in the business for more than… five years.
the major changes is the rate at which tracks are being produced and consumed I think. the lifespan is
shorter. that and the fact that people don’t but records anymore. I used to spend hundreds of euros every
month on records. that’s all gone of couse.
Andy Fink: Do you use any analogue synths or it’s all about software for you these days? Would be interesting to know
which sequencer you prefer too, if it’s not a secret :)
Dumb Dan: I’ve sold the little analog and outboards I had over the years. today it’s all software, and I still use cubase
for everything.
Andy Fink: What's the most influencing thing for you? Except music of course :)
Dumb Dan: a good night out, dancing. that’s number one. number two is having a night in total silence – that can be SO
refreshing!
Andy Fink: What do you like to do on your free time when you’re not involved into music?
Dumb Dan: I don’t have much free time to be honest, but I like to try new beers. I even write for a special beer
magazine in sweden sometimes haha… working now on an article on hops!
Andy Fink: Tell us few words about Dumb Recordings please – what are the nearest plans for it?
Dumb Dan: the plan is to keep releasing good tunes. less prog, more funky underground house.
Andy Fink: Do you miss the Dumb & Furry days? :) Something tells me those were really special ones for you and all the
great guys you’ve worked with back then.
Dumb Dan: yes we had a good thing going but eventually all of us started making music none of the others liked.. so we
had to split up.
Andy Fink: Could you share with us about your favorite artists and labels?
Dumb Dan: artist is easy.. I LOVE everything oliver moldan does these days. and this new guy from sweden, per
hammar. he will rule the world. very soon. labels are more dificult. I like black rose, bdr and tanzbar a lot.
Andy Fink: Continuing the theme – could you think of your all-time favorite track? :)
Dumb Dan: dance track… that has to be The Music Sounds Better With You.
Andy Fink: Few years ago you’ve been spinning at some gigs in Ukraine. Missed them all unfortunately… What were
your best and maybe worst impressions (if they were :)) over here?
Dumb Dan: I love Ukraine! I wish I could come back soon. the best gig has to be when me and Juha Nikumaa (jdotp)
were thrown onstage at the forsage. or maybe the festival in yalta square, thousands of clubbers going mad
for it. I had so many funny incidents and great experiences in the ukraine I wouldn’t know where to start…
let’s just say that global gathering 2007 is something I will always remember.
Andy Fink: Any chances for your fans to hear you somewhere in club near them? :)
Dumb Dan: I hope so, but right now there are no immidiate plans for international gigs.
Andy Fink: 2010 slowly comes up to it’s end, what are your plans for the rest of it? Events, releases, labels – anything :)
Dumb Dan: to tell you the truth Im putting a lot of energy into a project that has nothing to do with dumb dan. can’t
give you any details. and Im co-producing and engineering a lot for other artists these days.
Andy Fink: Thanks for joining us Dan! We hope we’ll be hearing more and more from you in the future!
